They dropped it WHERE?!
You and a team from your district are invited to attend a 21st Century Learning Leadership Institute sponsored by Arnold, a pioneering 1:1 school. This Institute is your opportunity to see and hear how Arnold's school is achieving academic excellence by putting technology in their students' hands.  Every student in Arnold has their own laptop with K-6 staying in the building, and 7-12 talking their laptops home.

There is a way to bridge the digital divide between students and school. A way to engage students and make education relevant. How? Research shows students with routine access to laptop computers score higher in writing assessments, demonstrate better analytical skills, engage in problem solving, and collaborate more effectively on schoolwork - all of which, ultimately, lead to higher student achievement.

The agenda includes discussion on how technology changes learning, the impact of professional development, key success factors, funding, and the digital tools today's students use to create knowledge. You will hear from how the Arnold school is currently using technology in innovative ways to make a difference, have the opportunity to see a laptop learning initiative in action and interact with students, teachers and administrators.

Cost of the program:
Schools are responsible for transportation to the Institute location and hotel accommodations. Apple will cover all meals and activities during the forum if allowable by your state ethics laws.

Who Should Attend?
School Presidents, Superintendents*, Principals, Curriculum/Technology Directors, Board Members, Teachers and other school leaders. You are encouraged to send a collaborative team of 3 or 4 people.

*Attendance at this event by a public official or employee may constitute acceptance of a reportable gift. Please consult your ethics official to ensure that no state laws, local laws or school district rules prevent your acceptance of costs associated with this event.

There will be a dinner at a local restaurant following the event on Tuesday evening.

To register please go to the following site:

We need to find a school that is PC and has the
contact information we need. The group at the ESU can provide us with the
names. Go ahead and contact the Service Unit and find a PC school that is 1 to
1. We can then contact them for the information (names, etc. to find out the
process, equipment needed and cost).

Do any of the laptop schools in our area have students check in their laptops over the Holiday Break?

Yes, we are checking-in our students computers over break.  We're having some "care" issues, plus we can do some updates and check for "unwanted activity" on the computers.  Some of the care issues include leaving the computer in their vehicle overnight; not good.

Randy Skaggs
Centura H.S.

We don't collect our laptops over the holiday.  Our technology coordinator does not get paid to work over the holidays, therefore updates can wait until summer.  However, with that said, we do collect laptops randomly to check for unwanted activity, and to do care issues as we find them on the spot check.

Garden County Schools does not check in laptops over the break, unless there is a "care" issue.  However, if students are having issues with the laptop and it needs to be sent in for repair, we try to do as many of those that we can during our two week break.  Laptops are checked on a random basis for unwanted activity throughout the year--some quite often until the student gets the message!  Updates, for both students and teachers are performed during the summer.

I have students that are trying to use Zamzar.com to get a clip from
the History Channels website or similar site.  When the go to convert
it says there is no file extension associate with this file.  Has
anyone had any success downloading video from this site or others other
than YouTube?

It looks like the History Channel has the movies locked so you can't download them, but there is an option just below the videos to get a link to the video site.  You have to stop the movie and then click on the Get Link option. Click on the copy button.  If placing in a PPT, I'd type text to represent the video and then Insert a Hyperlink and paste the URL in the Address box.  When in presantation mode, it won't play right in the PPT, but will open a browser in which it will play. There is a Full Screen option below the video.  If it is slow or freezes, use the Mac zoom-in command (Ctrl two-finger drag) to zoom in on the video.  When done, zoom back out and then Command/Ctrl Tab back to the presentation and resume the presentation.

The History Channel wants you to buy a DVD or get it thru iTunes if you want the actual video.

Do any of the laptop schools (Mac) allow iChat?  Any recommendations for items that we should be locking down?  We are ready to finalize our image...would like to do so today.  Thanks!

We do allow iChat at O'Neill, but monitor it for "educational uses only."  If students abuse it, we take it away for a period of two weeks.

We (Centura) have discovered that transferring larger files works great via iChat.  I believe we are not "offering" it to our freshmen, but the rest of the H.S. can use this, if they follow proper procedures.  It's also a handy quick communication tool to let teacher's know a student was held up, etc.  I'd really like to keep this feature.

Through the years, I have found iChat to be a very useful tool for communicating with students about assignments, clarifications, needed assistance and much more - especially when they are in studyhall and you are in classroom...they can just iChat you and you can reply when you have time vs. interrupting your class.  This year, my students will be communicating with students from other schools (Texas, California, Russia...) using iChat or Skype accounts.  I believe it is a very useful tool and shouldn't be taken away from the students.  From experience...they will abuse it at first, but once it becomes "not new" to them anylonger, they tend to use it more properly.  Many will need to be reminded and repremanded for improper use throughout the school year though, but that shouldn't ruin it for those who do use it for educational purposes.

Thanks so much for posting the meeting minutes.  I totally forgot all about the meeting, and I still feel like I got some great ideas just from the minutes.  It sounds like you had some great discussion, and I am sorry I missed it.  School is coming WAYYYY to fast for me.
